Child's Upholstered Chair for Team Sisters

A good friend of mine had this upholstered rocking chair that her daughter had outgrown. Now, I really have no place to put another kid's chair, but when she told me she was planning on throwing it out the recycler in me screamed "NOOOOOOOOOO!" So, of course I went and got it. And I've been kind of wondering what to do with it ever since. It really needed a makeover, it had been very well loved.

Very, very well loved. So, clearly it needed some work, but what fabric? and where was I going to put it? and whose chair was it going to be? Did I even have room in the house for this? So, I ended up doing what I usually do in these situations and just stuck the chair as-is in my living room, let the kids sit on it and totally ignored it for a few months.

And wouldn't you know it, the perfect solution has presented itself. After a total makeover, this chair will be auctioned off at a fundraiser for a wonderful local charity called Team Sisters, which was founded by another friend of mind and is dedicated to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. They are having an amazing event on September 7th, which you can read more about on the Team Sisters Facebook event page

So, what about the chair, you ask? Well, first I stripped it down to bare bones.

I was actually surprised not to find any batting under the fabric, so I added some. I think the batting not only makes the chair more comfortable, but also helps to shape the foam better.

I chose black and white zebra striped fabric for the chair, but I also wanted a little pop of color, so I used some hot pink piping in some places as an accent.

Like here, along the front of the seat.

And here, around the front of the arms.

Both arms and the seat finished.

Looking really good...

I used the last little bit of piping along the back edge, and it's almost done!

As a final touch, I decided to paint the rockers a hot pink to match the piping. Can never have too much pink, as my daughter would say. I must admit, I think that is a fun touch.

And that's it! A new upholstered rocking chair in all it's glory!

If you are in Tucson on September 7th 2013, you can bid on this darling little rocking chair at the Team Sisters Craft and Vendor Fundraiser. There will be lots of other vendors and auction items there as well. Come out and support a great cause! Hope to see you there!
